India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry has launched a new anti-dumping investigation into imports of 300-series and 400-series cold-rolled stainless-steel flat products originating from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The probe, requested by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), covers the period from April 2024 to March 2025, with injury assessment dating back to FY2021-22.

According to ISSDA, foreign producers have been selling stainless steel in India at unfairly low prices, undermining domestic producers such as Jindal Stainless, whose managing director Abhyuday Jindal stated, “Imports at dumped prices are hurting the competitiveness of local industries.”

India imported 1.73 million tons of stainless steel during FY2024-25, with China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea as major sources. This case marks a continuation of India’s protectionist measures following its 57.39% anti-dumping duty on Chinese stainless cold-rolled coils extended in 2021.

The move comes amid heightened global trade tension and reflects India's strategic pivot toward defending domestic industries. Beyond stainless steel, DGTR is also preparing investigations into imports of wallpaper, borosilicate tableware, glassware, and nylon products from China, signaling a wider trade recalibration in the region.
